As the first large-scale water purification facility in Washington, DC, this site featured an innovative system of sand-filled silos instead of chemicals to filter the city’s water supply. Today, the site is being revitalized by a public-private partnership dedicated to expand its legacy as a vital community asset. The planned residential and retail development, now named Reservoir District, is targeting LEED® Gold for Neighborhood Development.
As the first large-scale water purification facility in Washington, DC, this site featured an innovative system of sand-filled silos instead of chemicals to filter the city’s water supply.
Today, the site is being revitalized to expand its legacy as a vital community asset. The planned mixed-use real estate development now named the Reservoir District is targeting LEED® Gold for Neighborhood Development. With a distinctive, contemporary architectural aesthetic, there will be a cohesive design experience across the project. Plans also preserve many historical features, including filtration silos, regulator buildings, underground filter beds, and a restored Olmsted Walk along the perimeter.
The Reservoir District will bring new life to a central historic site along North Capitol Street, just three miles from the Capitol itself. This new community will reconnect with the DC street grid, and provide easy access for residents, workers, and visitors to and from all parts of the region.
Developed in consultation with neighborhood groups and City planning officials, the Reservoir District will bring many benefits to the whole community: modern, urban residences to own and to rent, many designated affordable; a full-service grocery store; neighborhood-focused restaurants and shops; a six-acre public park; a community center with pool, fitness center, meeting and gallery space; state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, and more. And all this will create thousands of permanent jobs.
